Once started the zombification progresses on its own, and it is quite often a scratch that got you zombified if fully healed before you start feeling the symptoms. To answer your question, if a wound says "infected" it means a standard mundane wound infection. Don't fret though, this isn't NEO Scavenger or real life.

Infection doesn't slow healing for some strange reason. But I believe it does increase pain/discomfort. I think in order of ideal (speed/efficiency) you can disinfect with wipes, disinfectant/bourbon with cotton balls, on the bandage, or directly on the wound.It doesn't matter. You can get infection only from direct zombie attacks. Dirty bandages highly increase the chance to get normal infection if you didn't disinfect the wound.
